Cataract surgery
When vision turns cloudy with age, the cloudy lens is replaced with a clear one.
What it is
A cataract is when the natural lens inside the eye becomes cloudy, usually with age. Seeing through it is like looking through a misty window.
In cataract surgery the cloudy lens is removed and a clear artificial lens (an IOL) is placed in the eye.
Who it's for
- Vision is blurry, hazy or dim, even with glasses
- Bright lights, sunlight or car headlights glare at night
- Colours look faded or yellowish
- Your glasses number keeps changing
- Reading, cooking or walking outside has become difficult
What to expect
- A full eye check, and tests to choose the right lens for your eye
- The eye is numbed; the operation itself is short
- Most patients go home the same day
- Eye drops for a few weeks, and follow-up visits
Questions patients ask
Is cataract surgery painful?
The eye is numbed before surgery, so most people feel little or no pain. You may feel some pressure or mild discomfort for a day or two afterwards.
When should I get my cataract operated?
When cloudy vision starts to affect daily life, such as reading, cooking, walking outside or driving. Dr Gandhi will check your eyes and advise you.
Will I need glasses after surgery?
It depends on the lens chosen and your eyes. Many people still use glasses for some tasks such as reading. Dr Gandhi will explain the lens options at your visit.
