Coming from Mehsana or a village for eye surgery: how to plan your visit
Many patients travel to Ahmedabad for eye treatment from towns and villages across Gujarat, including Vijapur and the rest of Mehsana district. A little planning makes the day easier for the patient and the family, and avoids a wasted trip.
Before you travel
- Call or WhatsApp first. We'll give you the clinic address and a time, so you don't have to wait for hours.
- Ask what the visit involves. A first check-up, tests before surgery, and the surgery day itself are different visits.
- Plan to stay for some hours. Some eye tests use drops that take time to work.
What to bring
- Your current glasses
- Old eye prescriptions, reports and any discharge papers
- A list of all the medicines you take, including for diabetes, blood pressure and blood thinners
- If you have diabetes, your recent sugar reports
- Something to eat and drink, especially if you have diabetes
Who should come with you
Bring a family member. After eye-drop tests your vision may be blurred for a few hours, and on the day of surgery you should not travel alone. Elderly patients should always have someone with them.
On the day of surgery
- Follow the instructions you're given about food and your regular medicines.
- Wear loose, comfortable clothes.
- Most cataract patients go home the same day. Your doctor will tell you when the first follow-up visit is, often the next day or within a few days.
Recovery at home
- Use the eye drops exactly as prescribed. Ask a family member to help if needed.
- Wear the eye shield or protective glasses as advised, especially while sleeping.
- Don't rub or press the eye.
- Keep dust, smoke and water away from the eye for the period you're advised. Be careful near cooking fires, fields and dusty roads.
- Avoid lifting heavy loads and bending forward for long periods until your doctor says it's fine.
When to call immediately
Call the clinic or get medical help the same day if you notice:
- Increasing pain that is not relieved by the advised medicines
- Vision getting worse instead of better
- A lot of redness, swelling or discharge
