Glaucoma care
Glaucoma slowly damages the eye's nerve, often without warning. Early checks protect sight.
What it is
Glaucoma is a condition where the nerve at the back of the eye (the optic nerve) is slowly damaged, often because pressure inside the eye is too high.
In the early stages there is usually no pain and no change you notice. Sight lost to glaucoma cannot be brought back, so finding it early matters.
Who it's for
- You are over 40 and haven't had an eye pressure check
- A parent, brother or sister has glaucoma
- You have diabetes or high blood pressure
- You've been told your eye pressure is high
- You use steroid medicines or drops for a long time
What to expect
- Eye pressure measurement and a check of the optic nerve
- Further tests if needed, such as a field-of-vision test
- Treatment usually starts with daily eye drops
- Laser or surgery when drops are not enough
- Regular follow-up checks, because glaucoma needs lifelong care
Questions patients ask
Can glaucoma be cured?
Damage already done cannot be reversed, but treatment can slow or stop further damage. That's why regular checks and using drops as advised are so important.
I see fine. Do I still need a glaucoma check?
Yes, if you are over 40 or have a family history. Glaucoma often causes no symptoms until a lot of sight is lost.
Can I stop the drops once my pressure is normal?
Don't stop drops on your own. Normal pressure usually means the drops are working. Ask Dr Gandhi before changing anything.
