LASIK
Laser treatment that corrects your glasses number, so you depend less on glasses.
What it is
LASIK is a laser treatment that reshapes the clear front surface of the eye (the cornea) to correct your glasses number.
It can treat short sight (minus number), long sight (plus number) and astigmatism (cylinder number).
Who it's for
- Adults, usually 18 or older
- Your glasses number has been stable for about a year
- Your eyes are healthy, and the cornea is thick enough (checked with tests)
- Glasses or lenses get in the way of your work, sport or daily life
What to expect
- Detailed tests to check if LASIK suits your eyes
- Numbing drops; the laser itself takes only minutes
- Both eyes are usually treated on the same day
- Vision usually improves within a day or two; follow-up checks after
Questions patients ask
Is LASIK right for everyone?
No. Thin corneas, an unstable number or some eye conditions can make LASIK unsuitable. The tests at your visit tell you whether LASIK, SMILE or another option fits your eyes.
Does LASIK hurt?
Numbing drops are used, so most people feel only pressure for a short time. The eyes may feel scratchy or watery for a few hours afterwards.
Will I need reading glasses later?
LASIK corrects your current number. Reading glasses after about 40 come from natural ageing of the eye, which LASIK doesn't stop.
